
Like Kant, Hegel most popular vocal music to instrumental, deprecating wordless music as subjective and indefinite. The essence of music he held to be rhythm, which finds its counterpart in the innermost self. Immanuel Kant (1724–1804) ranked music as lowest in his hierarchy of the arts. What he distrusted most about music was its wordlessness; he considered it helpful for enjoyment but negligible in the service of culture.
The Charleston was launched to the world in the 1923 Broadway present “Runnin’ Wild.” The was a music from the show referred to as “The Charleston” and it was carried out in a method similar to Ragtime music. Ragtime music was popular up until the late 1910s and was a heavy influence on dance music of the early 1920s, while jazz heavily influenced dance music within the late Nineteen Twenties. There were a number of bands and orchestras that had hits with dance music through the decade and many of them transitioned between totally different genres relying on what was the preferred at the time. Some examples of in style dance bands were Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra, the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, Ben Bernie and his Orchestra, and the Nat Shilkret Orchestra. Another aspect of dance music within the Twenties was the dance competitions and marathons that have been held across the country.
The Contemporary Vocal Ensemble offers an excellent training ground for work on musical theater techniques. Skills such as motion, character and dynamic singing are developed within the course.
