The word “pop music” was used from about 1880 onwards, when a type of music called music was popular. Many twentieth century composers needed to compose music that sounded completely different from the Classical and Romantic music. Modern composers searched for brand spanking new concepts, corresponding to using new instruments, completely different types, different sounds, or totally different harmonies.
